Western Australia Day (WA)

When is Western Australia Day (WA) 2022?

Western Australia Celebrations

Western Australia Day is a public holiday in Western Australia observed on the first Monday in June each year to honor the establishment of the Swan River Colony in 1829. Previously known as Foundation Day, Western Australia Day is often called WA Day.

In 2026, WA Day falls on June 6 this year. Western Australia does not observe the Queen's Official Birthday public holiday in June as the other Australian states do; rather, it is observed in September or October.

Western Australians commemorate WA Day as a public holiday and as the foundation for the Western Australian of the Year Awards, which honor outstanding performance in the following areas: community, Aboriginal, professions, sport, youth and arts & culture

History Of Western Australia Day

Western Australia Day, previously known as Foundation Day, marks the origin of the Swan River Colony, located near Perth today. The colony was founded in 1829 by Europeans to maintain the territory for the British Empire, although the French were also interested. After a few years, the land was renamed Western Australia in 1832.

Western Australia Day is observed on the first Monday of June each year. To recognize aboriginals, the government renamed the celebration Western Australia Day in 2012.
