Australia Day Origin
The colony of New South Wales appointed Captain Arthur Phillip as its first governor, and the young settlement immediately started commemorating the occasion of their arrival.
The commemoration, known as "Foundation Day" in the early 19th century, was honored by sports activities. Horse racing was popular in the 1820s, but regattas had taken off by the 1830s.
The first official holiday in Australia was declared to honor Foundation Day in 1838, 50 years after Phillip arrived. The first holiday turned into a yearly celebration and has since been celebrated on or around January 26th. January 26th was observed as "First Landing Day" in Sydney, where it was marked by anniversary banquets and afterward by a yearly race on the harbor.
By 1888, all colonial capitals, excluding Adelaide, had declared "Anniversary Day" a public holiday, and there had been celebrations around the various colonies.
Official festivities commemorating Captain Phillip's landing were held around the country to honor the 150th anniversary of European colonization in 1938.
Australia Day was established in 1946 as a national holiday celebrated on the same day by the Commonwealth Government, States, and Territories.
The Monday nearest to January 26th was still observed as Australia Day.
Australia Day was commemorated on January 26th, 1988, the country's bicentennial year. The First Fleet's journey from Portsmouth to Australia in early January of 1987 was reenacted as the centerpiece of the numerous celebrations.
All the states and territories didn't agree to celebrate Australia Day on a specific day in place of the following Monday until 1994. Since then, January 26th or the Monday after has been designated United Australia Day.
